Fret Buzz: What Causes It and What Can Be Done

That rattle when you play is called fret buzz. Here is what causes it, what the pattern of the buzz tells a tech, and how a setup gets rid of it.

You play a note and instead of a clean tone you get a rattle or a sizzle. That’s fret buzz: the string touching a fret it shouldn’t while it vibrates. A little buzz you only hear unplugged is normal on many electric guitars. But buzz that comes through your amp, kills sustain or makes notes choke needs attention.

Fret buzz has a handful of common causes, and they can all sound exactly the same. That’s what makes it tricky.

Where It Buzzes Tells a Story

When a guitar comes in with buzz, the first thing we do is play every string on every fret. The pattern says a lot:

  • Only on open strings or the first few frets: often a nut that’s too low, or a neck with too little relief.
  • In the middle of the neck: usually a neck with too little relief, or a high fret.
  • High up the neck: often action that’s too low, or a fret end that has lifted.
  • Only on one fret: almost always a single high or loose fret.
  • Everywhere: action that’s too low for the way you play, or strings that are too light.

The Common Causes

1. Not enough neck relief

A guitar neck needs a tiny forward curve, called relief, so the strings have room to vibrate. When the neck is too straight, or bows backwards, strings buzz in the lower and middle positions. This is very common when the air gets dry in winter. We explain why in Is Your Guitar Ready for Autumn?

2. Action that’s too low

Low action feels fast, but if the strings sit too close to the frets, they’ll buzz, especially if you play hard.

3. Uneven frets

Frets wear down over time, especially in the first few positions, and a single fret can sit slightly higher than its neighbours. That high fret causes buzz on the fret below it. The cure is fret levelling, crowning and polishing.

4. A worn or low nut

If the nut slots are cut too deep, or have worn down, open strings buzz against the first fret. The cure is a new nut. We replace cheap or worn nuts with TUSQ.

5. Strings that are too light

Switching to a lighter gauge reduces tension, so the strings move more and the neck pulls forward less. The guitar then needs a setup to suit the new strings. Our guide to choosing strings explains how gauge affects tension.

6. Your playing technique

Sometimes the guitar is fine. Fretting a note too far from the fret, or picking very hard, can cause buzz on any guitar. Fretting just behind the fret wire with firm, even pressure helps.

7. Something loose

Not all buzz is fret buzz. A loose tuner nut, strap button, pickup screw or output jack can rattle in sympathy with certain notes. Part of a proper check is finding these.

Why It Pays to Get It Diagnosed

Because several causes sound the same, the obvious fix is often the wrong one. Lowering the action when the real problem is the neck relief, for example, just moves the buzz somewhere else. And buzz rarely comes alone: the other signs your guitar needs a setup usually show up at the same time.

Get Rid of the Buzz

A setup addresses neck relief, action, nut and intonation in one go, and shows whether your frets need levelling. Here’s what happens during a setup. A standard setup is €75 including VAT, and most guitars are ready within 24 to 48 hours.
