Guitars rarely go wrong overnight. They drift slowly, and because you play them every day, you get used to it. Then you pick up a freshly set-up guitar in a shop and wonder why yours doesn’t feel like that.
Here are nine signs your guitar is due for a setup.
1. Strings Buzz
A rattle or sizzle when you play, especially one you can hear through the amp, usually means the neck relief or action has shifted. It’s the most common reason players bring us a guitar.
2. It’s Hard Work to Play
If barre chords tire your hand quickly or notes higher up the neck need a lot of pressure, the action is probably too high. A guitar shouldn’t be a workout.
3. It Won’t Stay in Tune
You tune up, play one song and it’s already drifting. That can come from the nut, the tuners, the bridge or simply old strings, and a setup is the quickest way to find out which.
4. Chords Sound Off Higher Up the Neck
Open strings are in tune, but chords around the 7th fret and above sound slightly sour. That’s intonation, and it goes out whenever strings, action or the neck change.
5. The Fret Ends Feel Sharp
Run your hand along the edge of the neck. If the fret ends catch your skin, the fretboard has dried out and shrunk. It’s a classic winter problem in the Netherlands once the heating is on. We explain why in Is Your Guitar Ready for Autumn?
6. Knobs Crackle
A scratchy sound when you turn the volume or tone knob means dust and oxidation inside the pots. Pot cleaning is part of every GuitarBuddy setup.
7. Bends Choke or Die
A note that cuts out halfway through a bend is usually low action or an uneven fret. It’s especially frustrating for lead players.
8. The Seasons Have Changed
Even if nothing feels wrong yet, the switch from a damp summer to a dry, heated winter (and back) moves every guitar neck. A setup at the start of each season keeps you ahead of it. More in How Humidity Affects Your Guitar.
9. You’ve Changed String Gauge, or It’s Been a While
Different gauges pull on the neck with different tension. And if your guitar hasn’t had a setup in over a year, or ever, it’s almost certainly due. Many guitars leave the factory with only a basic setup.
What Happens Next?
A setup addresses all of these in one go: neck relief, action, intonation, frets, fretboard, electronics and fresh strings. Here’s exactly what happens during a GuitarBuddy setup.
A standard setup is €75 including VAT, and most guitars are ready within 24 to 48 hours. GuitarBuddy is based in Zandvoort and works with players in Haarlem, Aerdenhout and Amsterdam. Book your guitar setup, or send a WhatsApp with a photo and tell us what’s bothering you.
