Your guitar sounds great until you touch the volume knob and it crackles. Or the signal cuts out when you move the cable. Or there’s a hum that won’t go away. Electronics noise is one of the most common problems we see, and most of it has a simple cause.
Crackling When You Turn a Knob
Cause: dirt and oxidation inside the potentiometer (pot). Over time, dust gets onto the track inside the pot and the wiper no longer makes clean contact.
The cure: the pot is cleaned inside. Pot cleaning is part of every GuitarBuddy setup. If cleaning doesn’t help, or the pot feels loose, rough or jumps in volume, it needs replacing, and that’s a good moment to upgrade to CTS pots with the right value for your pickups. We explain the difference in 250K vs 500K Pots.
Crackling or Cutting Out at the Output Jack
Cause: the output jack takes a beating. Plugging and unplugging loosens the nut, the jack turns in its socket, and the wires twist and break. The spring contact can also lose tension or get dirty.
Quick check: try a different cable first. Cheap or worn cables are a very common cause of crackles.
The cure: cleaning, re-soldering or replacing the jack, depending on what we find inside.
Crackling When You Switch Pickups
Cause: a dirty or worn pickup selector switch.
The cure: cleaning the switch contacts, or replacing the switch if it’s worn.
Hum and Buzz That Changes When You Move
Cause: interference picked up by single-coil pickups and the wiring. It’s often worse near computer screens, dimmers and fluorescent lights.
Quick check: turn to face a different direction. If the hum changes, it’s interference rather than a fault. If the hum gets louder when you touch the strings, there may be a grounding problem.
The cure: shielding the control and pickup cavities and making sure everything is properly grounded. It makes a big difference on Strat and Tele-style guitars. We offer shielding and grounding as part of our repair services.
Complete Silence
If your guitar makes no sound at all, check the simple things first: the volume knob, the pickup selector, the cable, the amp input and the amp’s volume. If it’s still silent with another cable and another amp, a wire has probably come loose inside.
Why It’s a Job for a Tech
Guitar electronics mean soldering in a tight space next to pickups, wires and a finish that doesn’t like heat. Contact cleaner sprayed in the wrong place can damage pots and switches, and a loose wire can be anywhere. We find the cause first, then quote before doing anything beyond a setup.
